non-fungible tokens

So I have been hearing about non-fungible tokens in the news the past couple of months

What the fuck is a non fungible token or NFT? According to Wikipedia, a non-fungible token (NFT) is a unit of data on a digital ledger called a blockchain, where each NFT can represent a unique digital item, and thus they are not interchangeable. NFTs can represent digital files such as art, audio, videos, items in video games and other forms of creative work. The NFTs can be bought on an NFT market. Access to any copy of the original file, however, is not restricted to the owner of the token. While the digital files themselves are infinitely reproducible, the NFTs representing them are tracked on their underlying blockchains and provide buyers with proof of ownership of the NFTs that is separate from copyright.

I guess the super-rich need something to spend their money on so they are buying these NFTs. An NFT sold for $688,000. This was a “Hand Painted” self-portrait by the world famous humanoid robot Sofia. I did not realize there was a world-famous humanoid robot. It has an encrypted digital signature.

Titled “Sophia Instantiation,” the image was created in collaboration with Andrea Bonaceto, an artist and partner at blockchain investment firm Eterna Capital. Bonaceto began the process by producing a brightly colored portrait of Sophia, which was processed by the robot’s neural networks. Sophia then painted an interpretation of the image.

Mars House, the world’s first digital NFT (non-fungible token) home, has recently sold for more than $500,000. The new owner paid digital artist Krista Kim 288 Ether, a cryptocurrency that is equivalent to $514,557.79 for the virtual property. In exchange, the buyer will receive 3D files to upload to his or her “Metaverse.” Metaverse is a virtual extension of our world, It sounds like to me this Metaverse is just a really expensive version of The Sims…lol

So you are paying for something that is digital that you cannot actually touch. I am floored. I guess if you have the money and want to waste it on something this one way of doing that.

Maybe one day we can all be so rich that we can spend money on useless crap like that instead…oh I don’t know….maybe food, water a roof over our heads. Just a thought.
